The US of A is a marvelously varied place, geographically and culturally, from the deserts of Nevada and Arizona to the snows and frosts of Maine and Alaska, from the dense urban bustle of New York City and Chicago to the lonely cornfields of Iowa and Arkansas.
Here’s a very short list of some interesting spots in the US that you absolutely shouldn’t miss if you’re touring the country.
The Hoover Dam
The Hoover Dam in Nevada is one of the most celebrated and visually recognized man-made structures on earth.
The massive edifice has featured in countless movies and on untold numbers of picture postcards. It controls the flow of the Colorado River and gives birth to Lake Meade in the process.
Patronize the gift shops outside and take the guided tour to the interiors, where you’ll be given a low down on the generation of hydroelectricity.
Las Vegas
What can one say about Las Vegas, also in Nevada, that will do justice to its reputation and importance?
Briefly put, this is the playground of the richest people in America and the world, and you’re almost certain to catch a peep of someone famous as you walk down its streets.
Imposing casinos like the Excalibur tower-like castles over the streets, and fun and excitement are in the air.
Even if you aren’t into gambling, this is not a place you can afford to ignore and still claim you’ve seen the country.
Prehistoric relic Arizona
The famous meteor crater in Arizona is a prehistoric relic, probably created thousands of years ago by the impact of a meteor from outer space.
The guided tour tells you all about meteors and space, and the gift shops sell pieces of the meteor, t-shirts, photographs, and other souvenir items. Nice place to visit if you’re anywhere in or near the state.
And while you’re there, you should of course not neglect to see the Grand Canyon, perhaps the most famous natural wonder of the world.
People from all over the world flock to this location and even the bravest of them are intimidated by its sheer size and depth, no matter how good a head for heights he might have.
Honolulu and Waikiki, Hawai
And then, of course, there are the fabulous beaches and endearing hospitality of Honolulu and Waikiki, in Hawaii.
Get prepared to be welcomed with garlands of fresh flowers, and greeted with a friendly ‘aloha’, as you settle down into that beach chair with suntan all over yourself.
Rock and Roll Hall of Fame
The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland is a must-see for all, especially music enthusiasts. It tries to memorize the great musicians of our times through likenesses and memorabilia.
Be aware that cameras aren’t allowed inside, but the gift shops sell enough items to satisfy your thirst for souvenirs.
It’s not really possible to do justice to this great country in a short piece like this, but remember that the number of places that you visit isn’t the real point of travel.
The point is the depth of your experience. So try to savor the essence of each place, to get the most out of your tour.
