Lingual Development Through Baby Sign Language

An increasing number of modern parents are incorporating baby sign language in their individual way of parenting.

But still, it is not yet as popular and common as the reading out of the bedtime stories to your child.

One of the most important reasons behind this is: in most of the cases parents fear that their children if introduced to sign language at an early stage of their lives will not be able to speak properly later on.

But to tell you the fact: a number of researches actually established that hearing children trained in sign language at their infancy go on to develop particularly rich spoken vocabularies rather than those of their friends who havent undergone any such training as babies.

The sign trained children also go on to become active communicators; they develop a natural ability to solve the problems through communication rather than resorting to tantrums.

They also take infinitives in solving any problem through communication instead of waiting merely as a passive onlooker.

Most of the noted child development experts are of the opinion that children should be introduced into the sign language as early as at their seventh month.

This helps to reduce the tantrums of the frustrated babies. There are many children, especially boys, who would not speak adequately until their second birthday.

It is more difficult to deal with the toddlers in this age bracket of 17 and 20 months, because the children of this age know clearly what they want; yet they are unable to express them properly.

Then the children at this age have a comparatively low tolerance level. Now a toddler who can sign to express what he needs will cause considerably less frustration for himself and lesser stress for his parents.

But this is not all! The advocates of this non-verbal language are of the opinion that signing helps the babies to acquire better linguistic skills and that becomes evident as they start their school days.

How is it possible?

The child development experts show that infant’ brains mature at a faster rate than it was used to be perceived before.

The advanced researches have shown amazing capacity of memory and logical and symbolic thinking abilities of infant brains.

As famous researcher in is field Acredolo said, the signing language only confirmed the early cognitive abilities of the infant brain.

The baby signing language actually boosts up the brains capacity of comparing and categorizes things. And this ultimately leads to better linguistic skill of the child.

However, if you ask whether baby-signing language is a language in the true sense of the term, most of the linguist experts will answer you in a negative.

But it is a subject of a greater debate. There are still many communication experts who believe that human language may have originated in gestures.

And that babies learn to make gestures to express their needs long before they start to talk is the proof of this theory.

So, what, if the linguist experts do not treat the baby sign language as a proper language?
