How To Arrange Furniture

Sometimes it is a frustrating chore to re-arrange your furniture in any given room in your home.

There is usually some kind of challenge in every room across the world. You just cannot squeeze all the items that you want into a room that you want.

It always seems that there is a door in the wrong place or a corner too small. Do not give up. There is always a way around these consequences.

  • Take measurements

The first thing that you need to do is to take measurements. You need to determine the size a room that you are working with and go from there.

Use a measuring tape to get the dimensions of a room. Make sure that you consider the dimensions of the hallways, stairs, and the sizes of the doors that lead into the room.

You do not want to buy a piece of furniture and then get it home to find out that it does not fit through the door. Take note of the length and width of the room.

  • Ensure the furniture compliments your room

Make sure that you keep the furniture theme close to the same in your room. Make sure that all of your furniture pieces compliment your room and do not take over.

Choose pieces that are not too big or too small for your area. Your pieces of furniture should be the right size and style for you and for the room.

Think about the types of furniture that you are going to be using in the room. You should think about where certain things in the room are located and how to arrange your furniture around them.

Things that you should consider are heat registers, cold air returns, doors, and windows. You do not want to block your heat or put a large piece of furniture in front of a window so that it makes it difficult to see out.

  • Arrange furniture to face each other

If you want a room that has an area so that you can converse with friends and family, then you want to arrange your furniture so that they are facing each other.

You also want to make sure that the seating is not too far apart from one another. Keep the furniture close so that you can communicate easier and so that you do not have to yell across the room.

If you discover that the furniture is still not close after you face them together, consider creating numerous conversation areas.

  • Encourage free flow of traffic

If you are trying to create a room for entertaining, then you should make sure that there is plenty of room for everyone to walk and move around in.

You do not want people bumping into each other or into the furniture. You want your furniture arranged so that people can walk freely around the room.

  • Create a focal point

Creating a focal point really helps in planning a space for arranging furniture. Usually most room’s focal point is TV. Other focal points can be fireplace, artwork and lots more. Furniture’s are usually arranged round the focal point.

When you are trying to create an area where you can watch TV together as a family, you have to make sure that the furniture is in good view of the TV.

Make sure that you can see the TV comfortably without having to move around in order to see the TV clearly.

When a fireplace is the focal point, what comes to mind is conversation because certainly, there will be lots of conversation going on while sitting round the fireplace. The chairs should be about 8 feet apart so as to ease interaction.

  • Pull furniture away from the wall

Do not drag the furniture against the wall. Always ensure there are few inches space between the wall and the furniture.

This will make the room look bigger and also if a larger space is your desire, then you are free to arrange in other to create room in the center. You can leave as much space from the wall if you already have a large room.

  • Consider lighting

Lighting has a way of affecting the mood of a room and that is why it is important to consider lighting when arranging furniture. Lighting has a way of drawing attention to a particular area of a room.

If you have floating furniture, consider the installation of in-floor electrical channels. Generally, chandeliers, lambs and the likes make the room bright at night while windows keep the room bright all through the day.

  • Maintain a balance

For any space to be totally arranged there should be a balance in the furniture arrangement. In that regard, all small furniture will have to be balanced with large furniture. Also add color while maintaining balance between the large and small furniture.

If the room is narrow, it is good to consider each of the furniture in there. To save floor space, use leaner tables and club chairs for seating. You can also mount the shelves on the wall and float your desk.

  • Begin with priority

It is a good idea to start arranging with furniture of priority. Largest furniture pieces should be arranged first before the smaller ones.

Some examples of these large furniture pieces are the bed and the sofa. These furniture pieces should be brought in first and then the rest of the space will be used in arranging other furniture.

  • Opt for obviously light weight furniture

The visual light weight of the furniture should be given attention especially in small living room.

In actual sense, a furniture piece can be heavy but with a light color and obvious legs, the furniture can look really light. This kind of furniture can make a small space look really nice.

  • Consider the center point

The center point of the room does not necessarily mean the actual center. It implies where the table can stay after bringing in the seating’s.

Considering the shape of the room, a particular spot can be mapped out and this point should be somewhere that can be changed when the need arises.

  • Make use of rugs of the right size

If you want to use an area rug, ensure it is of the right size. This is because these area rugs sit under the furniture.

It is very okay for a room to be without a rug and also okay for furniture to be on bare floor but if a rug must be used, it should cover the floor and allow the furniture to sit on it.

  • Use window wall

Using window wall is perfect for bedroom furniture arrangement. It involves facing the bed to the window side just for the pleasure of the view. Some benches can be placed at the end of the bed in case there is need for seating.

The dressing table, mirror and others should then be opposite the room’s door. The bed can also be flanked with nightstands.

Final words

No matter what way you decide to rearrange your furniture, make sure that it is in a comfortable position for you and in a way that will make the room look bigger and more inviting for you and your guests.

If you are planning on buying new furniture, ensure you start your plan on time as to enable proper arrangement.
