How Diet Affects Brainwaves

The human brain is a very complex organ made of numerous tiny cells. These cells that make up the brain are termed neurons. The function of neurons is to conduct electrical impulses along the length of them.

In this way, neurons are able to transmit signals throughout the brain and spinal cord. It is possible to measure these electrical impulses and as they are sent, they produce a wavy pattern. This is called a Brain Wave pattern.

What Are The Different Types of Brainwaves?

The brain does not produce one brainwave pattern, but instead produces four different patterns. These four patterns are called Theta, Delta, Alpha and Beta waves. Therefore, it is possible to decipher the activity of the brain based on the wave pattern it produces.

Theta wave patterns are produced in responses to our emotions. The wave patterns and are often seen in circumstances involving deep relaxation or meditation.

Theta waves are produced when lightly sleeping and are the waves used for hypnosis. The Theta wave pattern lasts for four to eight cycles and will involve the brain recording any emotions.

During the Theta state, it is possible to reprogram your brain. Theta waves occur at a frequency of four to seven Hertz.

Beta waves are the most common brainwaves. The reason they are the most common brainwaves is because they occur when the brain is completely awake.

Beta waves are present during many other times in persons activities, as we go through our lives in the outside world. Beta waves have a frequency of approximately fourteen to twenty Hertz.

Alpha waves are brainwaves that are associated with the state of meditation, they usually occur when people are daydreaming. They do not occur in a deep state of meditation like Theta waves. Alpha waves are found at a frequency of eight to thirteen Hertz.

Delta waves occur when we are in a very deep sleep. They can occur in a very deep meditative state as well. Most commonly, Delta waves are seen when people are unconscious. They are found at a frequency of one to three Hertz.

Can The Diet Truly Affect Brainwaves?

There are many cultures that believe that what a person eats can affect a persons mood and thought patterns or their brain in general. Therefore, it is important to eat the right kind of foods or disruption to brainwaves will occur.

The reasoning behind this is due to the fact that food will contain chemicals, which can affect the chemical balance of the brain. Brainwaves are produced when the brain cells release its own chemicals to cause an electrical impulse to travel from one brain cell to another.

If too much or too less of these chemicals are present, this can affect the transmission of electrical impulses throughout the brain, thereby affecting the brain wave patterns produced.

Many doctors suggest a diet rich in antioxidants to help reduce damage to the brain’s cells. Antioxidants can be found in a number of fruits and vegetables such as cranberries or broccoli.

It is also recommended to eat lots of food containing the Vitamin B complex, which can improve memory, which is common in cereals and grains.
