Colombia
is officially known as the Republic of Colombia. It is a
country situated in the northwest of South America and
is bordered by Panama to the northwest, by Brazil and
Venezuela to the east and by Peru and Ecuador to the
south.
The country’s geography consists of six main natural
regions that have their own unique characteristics:
• The Andes mountain range region which is shared with
Ecuador and Venezuela;
• The Pacific coastal region which is shared with Panama
and Ecuador;
• The Caribbean coastal region which is shared with
Venezuela and Panama;
• The Llanos are the plains which are shared with
Venezuela;
• The Amazon Rainforest region which is shared with
Venezuela, Brazil, Peru and Ecuador
A portion of the Ring of Fire forms a part of this
nation. This region faces continuous earthquakes and
volcanic eruptions. Peaks in the Cordillera Occidental
stand at 4,700 m, and those in the Cordillera Central as
well as the Cordillera Oriental are about 5,000 m high.
The main rivers of Colombia are the Magdalena, the
Cauca, the Guaviare, the Atrato, the Meta, the Putumayo
and the Caquetá. The country also has four main drainage
systems: the Pacific drain, the Orinoco Basin, the
Caribbean drain, as well as the Amazon Basin. The rivers
Orinoco and Amazon mark limits with Colombia to
Venezuela and Peru respectively.
