Sao
Tome and Principe is officially known as the Democratic
Republic of Sao Tome and Principe. It is a
Portuguese-speaking island-nation situated in the Gulf
of Guinea.
It consists of two main archipelagos: the Sao Tome and
Príncipe. They are located about 140 kilometres apart
from each other. Both these islands are part of
now-extinct volcanic range.
The sizable southern island of Sao Tome is situated
north of the equator. Both the islands are a part of the
volcanic mountain line of Cameroon. It has the island of
Annobón in the southwest, Bioko in the northeast as well
as the Mount Cameroon situated along the coast of Gulf
of Guinea.
Sao Tome is 50 kilometreslong and 30 kilometres wide. It
is more mountainous than the other island. Its highest
peak stands at about 2,000metres and is known asthe Pico
de Sao Tome. The island of the Príncipe is around 30
kilometres long and 6 kilometres wide.
Its peaks are as high as 948 meters. The equator lies
just south of Sao Tome Island and passes through the
islet ofIlheu das Rolas. The Great Dog Peak is a
volcanic plug peak in the southern Sao Tome.
