São
Tomé and Príncipe is officially known as the Democratic
Republic of São Tomé and Príncipe. It is a
Portuguese-speaking island-nation situated in the Gulf
of Guinea.
It consists of two main archipelagos: the Sao Tome and
Príncipe. They are located about 140 kilometres apart
from each other. Both these islands are part of
now-extinct volcanic range.
The sizable southern island of São Tomé is situated
north of the equator. Both the islands are a part of the
volcanic mountain line of Cameroon. It has the island of
Annobón in the southwest, Bioko in the northeast as well
as the Mount Cameroon situated along the coast of Gulf
of Guinea.
São Tomé is 50 kilometreslong and 30 kilometres wide. It
is more mountainous than the other island. Its highest
peak stands at about 2,000metres and is known asthe Pico
de São Tomé. The island of the Príncipe is around 30
kilometres long and 6 kilometres wide.
Its peaks are as high as 948 meters. The equator lies
just south of São Tomé Island and passes through the
islet ofIlhéu das Rolas. The Great Dog Peak is a
volcanic plug peak in the southern São Tomé.
