Portugal is a coastal country located in the southwestern part of the European Continent. The total area covered by the country is 92090 square kilometers of which 91470 square kilometers is land and the rest is water.
The country also separates the inland Mediterranean Sea
from the North Atlantic Ocean. Most of the rivers in the
country drain into the Atlantic and flow from north to
south.
The major rivers of the country are Mondego, Minho,
Douro, Guadiana and Tagus. Tagus is the longest river of
all and it stretches across 275 kilometers.
The northern bank onwards the terrain is rocky whereas
the southern bank has more of plains and rolling hills
filled with forests. The deltas of the rivers Antua,
Vouga, Fontao and Boco form a coast. The highest point
in the country is called Ponta do Pico and is 2351
meters tall whereas the lowest point is submerged
underneath the Atlantic Ocean.
The country is very densely forested and more than 30%
of the land area is covered in forests. The country also
have a few great lakes. The Pateira de Fermentelos is
the largest lake and is drained by two great rivers
Agueda and Certima. The Lagoa Corvos is also an
important lake of the country.
